"The narrator has a deep jealousy of birdkind's ability to fly. So he blames it all on the earliest known bird, the Archaeopteryx.(The hidden irony is that modern birds are probably not directly descended from the Archaeopteryx, which may not even have been capable of flight.) He hopes he can alter the course of history, and rid himself of the birds which taunt him in the present...by busting a cap in Mr. Archaeopteryx."[1]
